The fashion industry, in fact, is the second-largest polluter in the world, just after the oil industry, introducing synthetics, plastic, and chemicals that are used in 72% of all clothing creating a serious threat to the Environment and Marine Life.

The world now consumes about 80 billion new pieces of clothing every year. An average American will toss out 81 pounds of clothing this year.

Chemicals are one of the main components of our clothes. Synthetic fibers are a type of plastic, made from petroleum and they are non-biodegradable, and take more than 200 years to decompose. Synthetic fibers are used in 72% of our clothing. This presents a serious threat to aquatic life, to our health, our bodies and our minds.

Synthetic fibers (polyester, acrylic, nylon, etc.), used in the majority of our clothes, are made from fossil fuel, making production much more energy-intensive than with natural fibers. 400% more carbon emissions are produced if we wear a garment 5 times instead of 50 times. 60 million oil barrels are used each year to produce polyester.

Every year, thousands of hectares of endangered and ancient forests are cut down and replaced by plantations of trees used to make wood-based fabrics such as rayon, viscose, and modal. Such loss of many trees and entire forests is threatening our ecosystem and indigenous communities. 70 million trees are cut down each year to make our clothes. 30% of Rayon and Viscose clothing comes from endangered forests.

Fast fashion is a serious environmental threat to our beautiful Planet. We are only guests here and we are all responsible. Taking away from our Planet equals taking away from our Future.

Here is my article as a collaborating writer and fashion influencer for In the Limelight Magazine where I explain Fast Fashion and its Negative Impact on our Planet on page 29:
